Blackwater Cafe Closed!!!

I just heard this today from my boyfriend: the beloved Blackwater Cafe on Yosemite Street (only two blacks from my house!) has closed due to money/ordinance problems. The cafe has been open for 25 years and has become somewhat of a staple of Stockton. More recently, it has been subjected to numerous harrassments by the city and surrounding residents due to its hosting music acts, bands, etc (most of them punk/rock) coupled with the fact that, realistically, they only have room for about 45 people. But since Caffein Den closed they've had to take over as the desired venue for the music that used to be played there.

It's so sad and makes me so mad: here, Stockton city officials have been on this campaign to bring more arts/culture/nightlife/etc to the area and yet they only seem to cater to the upper-middle class conservatives who hide themselves in the Brookside/Spanos Park areas.
We don't even have a flippin' nightclub, people! Modesto had 2 of them...what's up??

I also heard the Bull n' Bear closed...we were supposed to go before it happened, but we didn't get to. Oh well...thank god for Java Aroma

They never swept their floor. They were only interested in punk rock. They were generally disagreeable to people who came in there who were not into punk rock. It just seemed like they didn't care, like they knew that you were going to have to come there anyway. And so they couldn't give a rat's ass about the business. I know the roaster and he makes some bitchen beans, and the downtown blackwater (the little closet sized place) is amazing in it's quality and service. Maybe they'll pick it up. Who knows.

And the whole city ordinance thing was not the issue. They worked that out with the City after Mayor Chavez came to their rescue. Besides, what with the post "Diamondgate" thing that happenened, the Record was reporting and shedding further light on the issue of music/entertainment permits. The City responded with hearings about the whole process. What happened there?

I don't think they knew how to run the place. But dig this, I bet you could buy the place for pennies on the dollar and have a profitable business if you were willing to run it and do it yourself. A year ago I would have jumped at the chance. I hope someone does. And cafes are hard to run in the post Starbucks world. I mean, ask the guys who ran the Latte Lounge that lasted 6 months last year. Or the Sutter Cafe, which was just kicked out last month. The coffeehouse as a business model is not what it used to be.

BTW-- How is the Oxygen Cafe where the CafDen was? THey have music. Also the place that openned in the lobby of the theater there across Pacific there is also slated to have entertainment. Also there's a nightclub where the old Fat Lamberts was on Hunter that needs to be checked out. I think they're into Hip Hop. And then there's the Blue Taboo out on Hwy 4 that's going to have house music on 2/24! So there's stuff to do. You just gotta know about it.

Stockton needs a good new venue that has its door open to all types of sounds. The funny thing is, Stockton officials dont really want a night life in stockton, there has been accouple of occations where someone tried to start up a club and the city turned it down, one of them being a Jazz club that was to open downtown about 2-3 years back.

I think we should compile a list of venues and start throwing little functions around town. I'll be starting with my shindigs in october if all goes well. I've also inquired about a spot outside of stockton right on the delta. Maybe a summer jam out there or something. thoughts???? other venues????

I was looking at the stockton fairgrounds to throw a party. Its pretty cheap at $750 for a building that fits 300, but that area is crappy. I also checked out Sutter Street Cafe, Nice but no booz!! Venues?? anyone??

I'm currently looking to open a recording studio/live concert venue in Stockton somewhere, but I've been having some small problems finding a suitable, available location. If anybody's got any information or help, please contact me at danielsmusic00@yahoo.com. We've really got to get the music ball rolling around here, we've got too much untapped talent, and I want to help everyone get to where they want to be.

Man, I just looked at a house, a residential house, over in Park Woods that had a recording studio built right in! It's got the monitors and wiring already set up! But that's over 600k! So that's out of the question.

As to Jaysun's response: What about an in some vacant industrial space? That would be key. Or in the summer, some outdoor property?

Yeah I got my eye out on this bar thats out west of highway 4, right along the delta. I've spoken to them and they said that the bar area holds about 150 people and they have an out door area that I would be able to use too but they have to see if they can get an alcohal license out there so they can set up a portable bar. I figure throw a little thing there to see what heads do come out so I know if i need to do extra promotion outside of stockton for the oct event, which i am still looking for a spot. It would be nice to throw something where the old Petco was on Pacific Ave. Or where Joannes Fabrics use to be by Delta. But commercial buildings are hard to rent out for one night.
